Anya Court Care Home hosts Virtual Dementia Tour

Care workers, volunteers, relatives and friends at Anya Court Care Home recently took part in a Virtual Dementia Tour to give them a better understanding of dementia.

25 people took part in the Virtual Dementia Tour, provided by training2care. The experience takes attendees on a journey through an interactive bus, giving them an insight into what it is like to live with the condition by creating feelings of confusion, vulnerability, intimidation and fear by altering people’s senses with interactive activities.

The Virtual Dementia Tour was invented 21 years ago in America by world renowned professional PK Beville. The tour is medically and scientifically proven to be the closest that you can give a person with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like.

Customer Relationship Manager at Anya Court, Karen Handley said: “I had the opportunity to attend this last year and it really opened my eyes to how dementia affects the person in ways that I had never previously thought.

“We enquired about having the bus at Anya Court and we decided to open our session to the families of residents as well as team members and our volunteers. The feedback from everyone who attended today as been really positive.”

A daughter of a resident at Anya Court Care Home, Caroline Simmons said: “This has given me an insight into the path my mum is now on and helps me understand the journey she is going through. Thank you for the opportunity for letting us share the experience particularly alongside your team members.”
