Luck and an active lifestyle are the secret says 100-year-old Don
A resident at Anisha Grange, our care home in Billericay has celebrated his 100th birthday.
Don Evans spent his special day at the home with around 30 of his closest friends and family who were treated to a traditional afternoon tea. He later had a second celebration with his friends at the care home where he enjoyed 1940’s entertainment, a homemade fruit cake and a visit from the local army cadets and Captain Michelle Cooper.
Don was born in Seven Kings in Ilford on 5th November 1922 and was the youngest of four children.
He started working at the age of 14 as an office boy at the printers until the blitz where he was relocated to where his father was working as a civilian instructor for the RAF. Don was then taught by his father before he joined the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry based in Worsted, Norfolk before moving to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps based in Portsmouth, then onto Corsham then Wiltshire near Bath. After the war Don worked at Martins Bank now known as Barclays Bank along with his brother and sisters which is where he met his wife Jean. They married on 19th May 1950 and went on have two children, four grand-children and 8 great grandchildren.
Don received a card from the King congratulating him on his milestone and said his secret to longevity is ‘plenty of luck and an active lifestyle.’
Don, 100, said: “I like to thank everybody for making my day so memorable, I couldn’t have asked for more. What made this day even more special was that the entertainer sang a song from mine and Jean’s first date and having the cadets come along and share this day made me feel proud of what I have achieved in my life having served in the army.”
“I had a lovely day. My family are so important to me and they are how I have managed to reach 100 years of age.”
Customer Relationship Manager at Anisha Grange Care Home, Rabea Azad said: “it is a pleasure to have Don and his wife, Jean live with us at Anisha and reminisce with Don about the adventurous life that he has lived. we were very privileged to share this momentous occasion with our Anisha family.”
