Hallmark Care Homes grants residents’ wish to meet Cardiff City legends
A Shire Hall Care Home resident had the opportunity to meet Cardiff City football legends, after winning our wish-granting competition.
Denis Hazlewood, 83 enjoyed afternoon tea and a meet and greet with Bluebirds goalkeepers Brian Murphy and Neil Etheridge at our home in Cardiff last Thursday.
When Denis, a resident at our residential, nursing and dementia home on Dumballs Road was asked to write down a wish, he revealed his desire to meet some Cardiff City football players.
Denis, who owns Cardiff City bedding, football shirts, signed pictures of the stadium and has decorated his zimmer frame with Cardiff City memorabilia, has been an avid football fan for 60 years and held a season ticket membership with the club for over five decades.
At 83, he still enjoys going to the occasional football match, and keeps up with what the team are doing daily on the Cardiff City website.
Hallmark Care Homes, which owns our recently refurbished care home, granted the gentlemen’s wish and organised the VIP experience with the football club after deciding he should be the home’s winner of its Christmas wish competition.
Retired Rail Worker Denis said: “I loved everything about the day, from getting ready and putting on my favourite Cardiff City shirt, to meeting the players talking about the club and having afternoon tea with them.
“I was also given a book signed by the players which I haven’t stopped looking at and tickets to go to last Saturday’s game against Millwall.”
Karen Grapes, General Manager at Shire Hall Care Home said: “Denis has been a lifelong fan of Cardiff City Football Club, who have been very supportive towards Shire Hall and we would like to thank them for helping us make Denis’s wish come true.”
The granted wish for the resident is just one of many, which we have made come true this year for each of our 15 care homes in England and South Wales.
Other fulfilled wishes include; reuniting a resident with her late husband’s WW2 diary which she hadn’t seen in 17 years and taking a 101 year old resident to meet Les Misérables star Alfie Boe in concert.
