Regency House resident turns 105!

Winifred Thomas, a resident at Regency House, our industry-leading care home in Cardiff has celebrated her 105th birthday!

Winifred, whose life has spanned two world wars, the 1918 flu pandemic and the Covid-19 pandemic celebrated spent her special day at the home with close family members, where she was gifted with flowers, chocolates, 105 cards and a birthday cake freshly prepared by the homes Chef.

She was born in Trealaw, Tonypandy on 7th June 1917.

She started working at the age of 15 in Woolworths before moving on to clerical work and working as an administrator for Gwent Police before retiring.

She met her late husband Brenys Wynne Thomas in City Church in Cardiff, which was formerly known as The City Temple.

They married in 1945 and went on to have two children, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Winifred received a second card from the Queen congratulating her on her milestone. She also received a visit from Rt Hon Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Graham Hinchey. She will be continuing her celebrations with a larger party on Saturday which will feature her wider family and friends.

Winifred said her secret to longevity is: “Having a good family and friends and belonging to a thriving church with lots of activities, particularly music. I was the organist and pianist of the City Temple from late teens and for the rest of my adult life. Also, I sang and led a ladies singing group. Church, music and family has been my life.”

General Manager at Regency House, Georgiana Ionescu said: “Winifred has been a resident at Regency House for nine months now and she is much-loved by all of us here. I am so pleased to hear that she had a great day, as she thoroughly deserves it.”

Speaking of all of the celebrations, her son Kelvin Thomas said: “She’s loving it. As with most people, she is enjoying being appreciated. With the Jubilee celebrations last week, we are continuing them – although the Queen is a young girl compared to her!
