Hallmark has officially broken ground on an 85-bed luxury care home that will become Cardiff’s first fully electric care home. The new £23.5 million development, Hallmark Melrose Grange in St Mellons, marks an exciting step forward in sustainable, next-generation care, with every detail designed to support residents to live each day to the full.

Construction is now underway at the 1.8-acre site on Cypress Drive in Cardiff’s St Mellons community, with Hallmark investing £23.5 million to bring this innovative vision to life. Hallmark’s CEO and Chairman recently joined the local construction team to celebrate the official start of the build. Hallmark Melrose Grange will deliver award-winning residential, dementia, and nursing care while embedding sustainable practices into its design and operation, becoming Hallmark’s first fully electric care home and representing a major milestone in the company’s sustainability journey.

The home will feature air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels to provide efficient heating, cooling, and hot water, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Sustainable travel will also be encouraged through EV charging points, cycle parking, shower facilities for team members, and easy access to local bus services. Set within a lush location, the landscaping plans have been carefully designed to protect and enhance the natural environment. The development will support local wildlife with a dedicated bat house and a dormouse corridor, and promote biodiversity with a spectacular wildflower garden for residents and families to enjoy. A unique dementia-friendly garden will offer a tranquil, accessible space filled with sensory planting, alongside a fruit and garden patch to encourage independence and provide residents with the pleasure of tending to their own produce.

This landmark project will be Hallmark’s fifth luxury care home in Cardiff and will create 115 local jobs. Built by Cardiff-based Langstone Construction, the project aims to work with local suppliers wherever possible to support regional industry. Hallmark Luxury Care Homes CEO Nye Brown said: “Melrose Grange, Hallmark’s first fully electric care home, represents an exciting step toward a more sustainable future. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to provide the highest standards of care and comfort. By expanding our award-winning care across South Wales, we can support local people in the later stages of life in St Mellons to live active, fulfilled lives.”

Hallmark Melrose Grange is scheduled to open its doors to residents in 2027. For further information and to sign up for regular newsletters about the new development, click here.
